Helen is a currently a manager in the NHS and is a nurse by background. She is passionate about working with people whether staff or the public. She has enjoyed working in the NHS over the last 18 years, initially working in the hospital in various places such as medical wards, A&E, and elderly care. More recently she has been involved with NHS Walk in Centres which are nurse lead units where she promoted the advanced nursing role.
Helen went onto work for the Department of Health to become part of the National team responsible for Walk in Centres for the south of England. She has since moved on to a couple of other managerial and project management posts both in East London and now currently working in Bristol. Dedicated to ensuring that quality services are delivered to the patients she is now part of the commissioning and service development directorate. Additionally, she enjoys teaching at City University and also has her own management consultancy. Keen to improve her knowledge and skills she has also undertaken a number of short courses and credited qualifications which include several clinical courses, being a PRINCE 2 practitioner (project management qualification), HNC in Business and Finance, 2.1 BSc Honours in Counselling and Psychology and is currently undertaking a Masters in Health Management.
Kam is an Occupational and Research Psychologist and an Accredited and Registered Psychotherapist and Supervisor of Therapy. He has worked in Primary, Secondary and tertiary-care settings with various psychological. His PhD investigated cultural marginality and mental health for Black and minority ethnic people in Britain. Currently, he is Head of Research at the Mental Health Foundation. He is also a consultant and founder of the Culture Doctors (www.culturedoctors.com).
Andrew is Operations Director with the Tulip Mental Health Group in Haringey and has overall strategic and operational responsibility for all of Tulip’s services. Tulip itself is a registered charity and voluntary sector organisation, providing community mental health services across 4 London Borough to people with a variety of mental health problems, ranging from common mental disorders such as anxiety and depression, to severe and enduring mental health problems such as schizophrenia.
Before his current position, Andrew held a variety of posts in Tulip, including manager of the Assertive Outreach Services and Senior Manager of the Outreach and Community Services. Andrew also has a Masters in Psychodynamic Practice from the Tavistock and Portman Clinic/Middlesex University.
Originally working in the classical music business, Andrew left to work in Health and Social Care in 1986. He started his career as a Project Worker in a Hackney residential rehabilitation unit for single homeless people with a variety of needs, and worked with a range of people including survivors of abuse, people with mental health problems, and people with alcohol and substance misuse issues. After a period as the Deputy Manager of the project and finally as the Community Care Manager for the parent organisation, Andrew left in 1994 to join the Tulip where he remained ever since.
Peter is Professor of Mental Health and Joint Head of the Centre for Transcultural and Mental Health Research at Middlesex University. He is co-editor of the Journal of Mental Health Workforce Development and Mental Health editor of Research Matters. He has undertaken extensive research in the assertive outreach field, and has recently published a book on Assertive Outreach (Ryan P and Morgan S Assertive Outreach: A Strengths Approach to Policy and Practice, Elsevier 2004). A new book\CD Rom (The Management of Occupational Stress and Violence in Mental Health Services Ryan P, Dawson I & Hill R Pavilion) is due to be published in March 2007.
Peter has been involved in extensive mental health curriculum development in the areas of risk assessment and the management of violence, assertive outreach, dual diagnosis, acute inpatient care, and effective community care. He is Chair of ENTER Mental Health (a European mental health research and development network) since 1999, and has won three European mental health research grants, worth a total of over 6 million euros. In 2005 he also won a HEFCE grant for Middlesex University for a Centre of Excellence in Mental Health and Social Work.
